Between The Burrum River mouth and Point Vernon is 30 km of sandy shore interrupted by two creeks, resulting in three long beaches. The shore initially faces north-east, swinging around to face north by Point Vernon. At the same time, wave height decreases to less than 0.5 m and the surf zone bar widens to become 1 km wide sand flats.
Toogoom is an old but small settlement on the southern banks of Beelbi Creek mouth. It was originally settled on the creek by timber cutters, while today it is gradually spreading down the open beach. The beach (1518) extends from the creek mouth for 7 km toward the east-south-east to the smaller mouth of Oregan Creek. The Beelbi Creek tidal shoals extend up to 2 km off the creek and the northern 3 km of the beach, with the central section having 1.5 km wide sand flats, and more, smaller, 1 km wide tidal shoals off Oregan Creek (Fig. 4.96). As a result, waves are low at high tide and non-existent at low tide, unless you make the long walk out to the shoreline. The actual high tide beach is 30 m wide and relatively steep, contrasting with the wide, flat sand shoals. The beach is backed by a low foredune and foredune ridges that extend up to 1 km inland. A road parallels the back of the beach with a number of access tracks leading to the beach.
