The small McGowan Island community is located immediately north behind beach K 1027. This is a 700 m long west-facing sand beach bordered by low sandstone rocks, with some outcropping along its central-northern section, and sand and increasing rock flats off the beach to the north. A vehicle track runs through the trees to the back of the beach where a solitary house is located.
