The eastern side of Noosa Head faces into the prevailing southerly swell and winds, and is a far more energetic shoreline. The basalt rocks of the head extend south for 2 km to Paradise Caves, with two beaches in between. The Noosa walking track runs to the head and along the back of both beaches and on to neighbouring Sunshine Beach. Alexandria Bay is a 1.2 km long, open, east facing bay containing a sandy beach (1537) of the same length. The beach is bordered by Hells Gate to the north and Roaring Cave and the Devils Kitchen to the south, their names confirming the more energetic nature of the waves. The higher waves also maintain a double bar beach system, with the low gradient beach fronted by an inner bar usually cut by three beach rips and permanent rips against each head (Fig. 3.5 a & b), then a deep trough and the outer bar 100 m off the beach. As the rips and waves average 1 to 1.5 m, this is a hazardous beach for swimmers. The beach is backed by densely vegetated sand dunes that rise up over the bedrock to a height of 40 m.
Beach Length: 1.2km
General Hazard Rating: 6/10
