Seven Mile Beach (NSW 21) is in fact only 8.5 km long (5.3 mile) and while it is suffering some erosion at the southern end, it has certainly not lost 2 miles since its naming. This is an interesting beach that begins at the rain forest covered Jews Head and runs south backed by the 2 km wide undeveloped Newrybo Swamp and freshwater Lake Ainsworth both part of a low Pleistocene barrier system. The southern 2 km is occupied by the growing beachfront town of Lennox Head (Fig. 4.18). Road access is via Broken Head to a rough parking area at northern end and at Lennox Head in the south with its numerous facilities, the Surf Life Saving Club and several parking areas, while the central stretch can only be reached on foot. Of added interest is the old lakebed, which lies off Lennox Head as an expanse of dark Pleistocene coffeerock, which controls the southern surf breaks. The gently sloping beach consists of fine sand, which with the energetic waves produces a rip-dominated double bar system. Lennox Head is known for its panaromic views, its world-class point break and to many youth, for the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation camp and the annual Gromfest surfing contest. The Lennox Head Surf Club, formed in 1950, is located adjacent to Lakes Ainsworth, north of the coffeerock, where the beach widens and the surf increases and the lifesavers perform an average of 11 rescues a year. The surf club itself is built on skids, so it can be towed inland, if and when the beach erodes. Threat of erosion in the township resulted in the building of a seawall in the 1990s, the wall now impinging on the beach.
